Statistics Statistics

Statistics

Understanding the statistics around global waste and emissions is what led us to create Nothing New.

Although we know we are just a small sneaker brand, we think there is a problem and want to help foster solutions. Below are some of the statistics1 that prompted us to start Nothing New, along with how we plan to address the problem.

Plastic

By 2050, plastic in the ocean will outweigh fish. 170 million tons of plastic already fill the world's oceans.

9%

Of plastic is currently being recycled. The rest ends up in our landfills, in our streets, and in our oceans.

8 Million

Tons of plastic enter the oceans each year. That’s similar to emptying a garbage truck of plastic into an ocean every minute.

138%

The increase in global plastic production from 2004 to 2014.

Up-cycled plastic is the main material used in Nothing New sneakers. The uppers, laces, tongue label, and footbed liner are all made of 100% recycled post-consumer plastic.

5.6

Plastic bottles repurposed
per pair

160

Gallons of water are saved per pair compared to normal cotton canvas.

Carbon

While we all produce carbon directly or indirectly as we go about our daily lives, our carbon output has reached unsustainable levels.

19 Inches

The level by which the sea will rise by 2050 due to global warming caused by carbon emissions.

700 Million

Tons of carbon dioxide are emitted each year by the sneaker industry.

30 Pounds

Of CO2 are created on average by manufacturing one pair of shoes.

By partnering with material suppliers with environmental impact accreditation, managing production closely with them, and using high-quality stitch constructions we are able to minimize our carbon impact. As a direct-to-consumer brand we recognize that our operations, particularly shipping our shoes to customers, emit carbon. Until we find a long-term solution to minimize carbon output in shipping, we are purchasing carbon offsets.

Our Carbon Neutral Commitment

Waste

Breaking down the problem
takes time...

450

The number of years, on average, it takes for a plastic bottle to decompose.

30-40

The number of years, on average, it takes for shoes to decompose in a landfill.

300 Million

The number of shoes thrown out each year.

Send us back your used Nothing New sneakers and we’ll give you $20 off your next purchase and either refurbish the sneakers and gift them to charity or disassemble them and put the materials back into the supply chain.

Virtuous Circle Program

Next Steps

Nothing New is committed to being a positive impact on our community, industry, and environment. This philosophy is ingrained in our DNA. If you have feedback or ideas on how we can continue to improve, please let us know. We appreciate your feedback and advice.

Open Mindedness

We expect some people to tell us that we are overestimating the problem and some to tell us we aren’t doing enough. Regardless of your opinion, we are open to criticism. In fact, we want to hear it! We strive to continue learning and improving.

Transparency

By continuing to share as much data as possible with our customers and interested third-party organizations, we hope to use the feedback we gather to continuously raise the bar for ourselves and our industry. We hope that this is just the beginning.
